So, I realize there's a ton of YuGiOh stuff to watch, and I really want to get into it, but I don't know where to begin. I guess I should watch the original series first to understand the show first, but, I don't know, any suggestions?

I'd say watch the first show, and then see whatever you want to. Looking back on it I don't think I like Yu-Gi-Oh! GX that much.

The first series is the best one to start with. There is Season 0, but honestly, the connection of that one to the actual first series is tenuous. You're better off just starting off with Yugioh. Now, the dub is a lot of fun, but it's rather badly censored. So if you want more uncensored goodies(like blood and arms getting torn off), then the subs are the way to go.

There is also the manga, but it's a lot harder to find and honestly, the anime is better. The filler arcs are a bit annoying, except for the Waking the Dragons arc, that one is badass.

From there, I strongly recommend you watch the subs, because GX has an entire season that wasn't dubbed in English. Then there's 5Ds, Zexal, and Arc 5. Some of the later ones haven't been dubbed yet, so yeah.

Also, keep in mind that for the first season of Yugioh, the rules hadn't been invented yet. So everyone was bulls***ting pretty much. The same applies for a bit of the second season, but they get their act together

When did season 0 come out? I've never heard of it before.

Toei made that series.

It came out in 1998

It might as well be renamed "Kid with an evil pharoah inside of him"

It's technically canon, yeah, but it's such a wildly different tone than Yugioh proper that you're fine not watching it.

It came out before Duel Monsters, but it wasn't really about card games and it kind of sucked so it was scrapped.

Duel Monsters–the first series everyone thinks of when you say Yu-Gi-Oh!–is where you should start, naturally. It'll introduce you to all of the important characters, cards, cliches, events, and lore of the show.

GX is a continuation of Duel Monsters set about 10 years later, if I remember correctly, but it features 99% all new characters and takes place mostly at a school for dueling (Duel Academy). Personally, I thought the first two seasons were fun enough, but I didn't like the third so I jumped off and I've only ever seen some of the fourth subbed. It's not nearly as good as DM but it's not terrible.

5Ds comes after that, but I can't tell you much about it because I stopped watching probably midway through the first season, and haven't had the urge to go back and watch more of it in years.

Then there's Zexal (or ZeXal if you want to nitpick), but I couldn't stand five minutes of the first episode's dub, so I quit and never looked back.

I know nothing about Arc-V, which comes after Zexal, so you're on your own there.

DM, GX, and 5Ds are all connected in one universe, but it doesn't appear that Zexal and Arc-V are in there, so if you only watched those first three you'd probably be all the better for it.

GX and 5Ds might not be connected, given the recent development by Arc 5 of the Synchro, Fusion, Xyz, and Standard dimensions

I haven't heard of that. I figured they were since GX continued DM with the appearance of a handful of notable characters and plot elements, and 5Ds makes mention of Yugi and Kaiba and has a memorial for Pegasus.

Duel Monsters was where the timeline split, presumably. The whole thing is still being developed.

As it is now, the Fusion dimension seems to be a dark Duel Academy(same ranking system). The Synchro Dimension is probably the 5Ds one, given that Jack and Crow are confirmed to be in it. We don't know much about the Xyz dimension and the Arc 5 dimension is self explanatory as the standard.

@Darker
Don't expect more than card games until you get to Marik. Before that, things are relatively light hearted most of the time. When Marik shows up, that's when things suddenly go nuts.

Also forgot to mention that GX has that issue too. Don't expect anything too serious until the second half of the first season, though it definitely picks up after that(especially in Season 3 and beyond).

Strangely, some of GX's censoring works in its favor. There's a character who dies in the Japanese and yet comes back later on with little explanation. In the dub, his soul was lost and then presumably returned along with the rest. Ironically, the fourth season where said character returns was never dubbed, so both versions end up with flaws.

Yu-Gi-Oh has been re-mastered and is currently airing, so I think you should pick it up.
